A street at Asia Town, IT Park in Lahug, Cebu City was named after India, inaugurated last 29 December 2009 as part of the anniversary celebration on the establishment of the Philippines-India Diplomatic Relations.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo proclaimed the month of November 2009 as “Philippines-India Friendship Month”.

Signed on 23 October 2009 in Malacañang Palace, Presidential Proclamation No. 1924  is in observance of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations with India on 16 November 1949.

Seven years after India achieved independence in 1947, the Philippines and India signed a Treaty of Friendship on 11 July 1952 in Manila to strengthen friendly relations. By November 1949, the Philippine Legation in New Delhi was established and then elevated to an Embassy.

The naming of the street was previously proposed by Francisco Benedicto, The Philippines’ Ambassador to India,  and was confirmed by the Cebu City Council in a resolution.

India and Cebu, miles apart in distance, do share a lot in common. Among which is a healthy business enterprise in off-shore outsourcing.

Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) is expected to usher Cebu’s economy into a full recovery pathway, putting the island province into one of the richest economies in the Philippines starting 2010.

The BPO sector continues to support the province economic vitality via continued investments and expansion of manpower even as the rest of the world deals with the depressing economic recession that injured some industries especially exports in the last two years.

Cebu is also slowly attracting the software development investments from software development companies, as talents here are found to be far more competitive than that of India.

Despite this rosy outlook for Cebu’s 2010 BPO investments, there are problematic issues that may hinder this robust projection. One of these problematic issues that keep Cebu from graduating to an “emerged” destination from “emerging” is the quantity of manpower it supplies a year.

Cebu only supplies an average of 23,000 graduates annually while developed BPO destinations such as Bangalore (India,); Delhi (India), Mumbai (India), Manila (Philippines) and Dublin (Ireland), produce at least 150 thousand graduates a year.
