In spite of the onslaught of flash floods and heavy rains from Tropical storm Ketsana (local name Ondoy), the Philippines’ business process outsourcing sector, the country’s sunshine industry, continued with their operations during the stormy weekend.
Electricity and communications were online in the BPO-centric areas of Makati, Ortigas and Quezon City, though there were reports of employees being stranded during their commute.
But how about the extremely flooded areas like Marikina City, Philippines?
According to Business Processing Association of the Philippines (BPAP).chief executive Oscar Sanez, BPOs with facilities in flooded areas like Marikina and Eastwood in Libis, Quezon City have business continuity systems in place to ensure operations in the contigency of calamity.
I wonder how much this is true or just wishful thinking?
Local news have reported that basic utilities such as electricity in flooded areas in Marikina have been suspended to prevent further harm and destruction.
Perhaps, business loads were transferred to satellite offices in other regions? BPO destinations like Cebu City and Davao City were unaffected by the tropical storm.
