IT and telecom research and analysis firm IDC shares 10 predictions regarding the upcoming trends in the Asia-Pacific’s information/communication technology sector this new year of 2010.
1. Cloud Computing matures
In 2010, cloud computing will evolve to include business continuity/disaster recovery. Companies, that are ready to make use of cloud computing services, will demand cloud computing SLAs with such capabilities.
2. Business Analytics, Better Business
This year, business analytics will have an important role in aiding CIOs manage cost, comply with standards and overall, provide information as a strategic asset for business development and continuity.
3. Integration of Social Media in Enterprises
Social media will be accepted as a necessary business tool to increase market awareness of an enterprise’s product/services and build/maintain customer relationships.
4. The Rise of converged fabric solutions in data center evolution
“Converged Fabric” refers to a consolidated high-performance computing system which consists of loosely coupled storage, networking and parallel processing functions linked by high bandwidth. This year, converged fabric solutions may be the answer to the overly-high maintenance problems of business data centers.
5. From SaaS to KaaS
Software-as-a-service(Saas) with intellectual property rights becomes Knowledge-as-a-service(KaaS). This 2010, vendors will be expected to provide original, licensed IT solutions with embedded with industry- and/or process-specific IP.
6. Smart Phones rise in emerging economies
It is expected with the increasing sophistication of mobile users in emerging markets such as India and China, over 295 million units in handset shipments will be delivered in 2010.
7. Enterprise Appliance dawns
Hardware vendors will continue to provide dedicated, preconfigured hardware and storage for specific applications and workloads for enterprises.
8. Reviewing Chargeback for IT
The ability to effectively provide chargeback functionality already exists at many levels for Desktop, storage, and certain applications yet the the full benefits of Chargeback 3.0 are yet to be developed and understood by the business owners.
9. Intelligent intiatives to rise in Asia
2010 will see governments in Asia working in sync with ICT vendors and citizens to make inroads for foreign investors and technology in their respective regions, competiting with one another to secure gains and profits.
10. The Rise of Machine to Machine
With over 600 million fixed-line subscribers and over 1.6 billion mobile subscribers in the Asia Pacific (excluding Japan), the opportunity for Machine to Machine (M2M) could be over 20 billion M2M devices connected to the public and operator networks by 2020.
This would lead to new wholesale and retail business models that will focus on latency and quality of service for commercial M2M applications such as surveillance and environmental sensors.
