The Managers Association of the Philippines Management Man of the Year is a prestigious annual title that the association awards to individuals in the business community or government for attainingĀ  distinction in the practice of management and for contributing to the Philippines’ progress.

This 2009, one of its reciepients– the current chair of Institute of Corporate Directors and Institute for Solidarity in Asia, Dr. Jesus P. Estanislao, shares 10 key lessonsĀ  he has learned through a sterling career spanning two decades, which included the rehabilitation of the Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP) among others–10 key lessons that every manager, corporate executive and business leader should heed.

Here are some of those key lessons Dr. Estanislao learned, as summarized:

  1. Focus on the sustainability and long-term strength of the institutions and corporations one is privileged to head.
  2. Establish a corporate culture that meets the demands of professional governance, committed to the common good within the broader community.
  3. Connect to the global community, in the mainstream of the open channels through which ideas, technology, finance, and best practices flow.
  4. Elect/Cooperate with government officials with the same liberal mind, political will and strong fiscal discipline.
